Shortly after the first inauguration of George W. Bush as the 43rd President of the United States, while sitting around with a few guys that I thought were my friends, I was drawn into a conversation about who I voted for, and was shaken to the core with how they reacted when I said I voted for Bush. I was so shaken, I vowed I would never vote again.

Being a black man, and because I had been ridiculed so many times by a few of my black friends when I confessed I had voted for George W. Bush after his first election, I was inspired to write The Bush Man. While it served to relieve some of the stress that came from being called everything but a child of God, I never really had the guts to publish it. I composed this revised version which covers both elections, with the hope that it will help my friends understand why I voted the way I voted, and that when I took it to the Lord to get His advice about who He would vote for and why, His Spirit referred to the man who would become our 43rd president as…“The Bush Man.”
Why did I vote for George Bush for President of the United States of America? is a question I asked myself after being ridiculed so many times. Then I remembered: During the run-off between Bush and Gore, I was praying in the Spirit one day, and asked, “Lord, if you were a man, and I know you’re not, but let’s pretend you’re me for a moment. If you were here in the earth and had a chance to vote for one of the two leading contenders, which one would you vote for, and why?”
I’m sure the Spirit of the Lord was thinking: Who does this idiot think he is, to be asking such a question as this of the Lord? But His Spirit was quick with this response:
“I like the Bush man. He is a good man. He has what I wish you had, Robert. A brave and courageous heart (angel). While your heart (my angel named Elijah) is a mighty spirit of prophecy, she is a cream puff compared to his spirit. He can’t lose with the spirit he has,” shared the Spirit. This was getting way over my head.
“As far as that Gore fellow,” the Spirit continued, “he has a lying cheating heart. Think about it, son of man!! Here is a man that has everything in the world going for him. He is smart, already the vice-president, and has no reason to lie. Yet he chose to lie on several occasions. Some, of course, will say it’s because of low self-esteem. But even if that was the case, why would you vote for someone with low self-esteem?” asked the Spirit.
“But remember what Jesus explained to His disciples,” the Spirit continued explaining, “after the scribes and Pharisees asked why didn’t He and His disciples wash their hands before eating? ‘Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.’”(Matt. 15:15-18, KJV).
The Spirit of the Lord was trying to get me to understand that many of the words which comes forth from a person’s mouth, whether they be truths or lies, are put there by their angelic-hearts. And since a lying spirit obviously defiles a man, making that man a child of the devil, forcing that man to speak only the words which his father the devil puts in his mouth to speak.
While that person will only speak that which their father in the ruler of the world gives them a voice to speak, for God has allowed Satan to rule the world, but God Almighty is still the Creator of the world by His words to the Father, and reigns supreme over any allowance He has given to Satan, permitting Satan to go only so far. And God by His Spirit was telling me that I should judge the candidate by his heart, by the words springing forth from his mouth.
The Spirit went on to declare concerning Bush:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, remember, for theirs is the Kingdom of God. If his heart is in the Kingdom, he also is a citizen of the Kingdom. The question you need to ask yourself is: ‘Why would I vote for someone not from the Kingdom of God?’”
I couldn’t hate Gore who had obviously been deceived by a lying spirit, for I myself have been deceived many times. I only pray that he comes to understand that he does not have to stay deceived. That he can repent and turn to God at anytime, and a new spirit the Lord will give him. But I found what the Lord revealed about Bush to be fascinating. And judging from the words which springs forth from his mouth, I suspect Bush has an angel that makes his soul poor in spirit.
Having never met nor spoken with President Bush, I believe, and I could be wrong, we have two different types of angels as companions to our souls, but a kindred Spirit in the Holy Spirit. I base the latter on what Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians; how that by the one and same Spirit, God makes some apostles, prophets, governments, etc. And when I heard Bush respond without waver: “As often as I’m led by the Spirit to pray,” to the question: “How often do you pray?” posed during an interview in the White House two years into his first term, affirmed my belief that we have a kindred Spirit in this holy City of Light from above called Jerusalem.
The Kingdom Spirit Jerusalem was given to Bush when he was elected President, when he became a head of state. For kingdom spirits are given to heads of states. And I’m sure this is the reason why he made the comment about praying as often as he was led by the Spirit to pray. But when it comes to our hearts, I must admit, at first I did not understand why God said He wished I had a brave and courageous heart as the one Bush has, seeing He is responsible for the spirit I have. Some months later His Spirit revealed:
“It was Me, the Holy Spirit, and not God, saying that I wished you had the kind of heart that Bush has, for it would have made My job easier. You listen and learn well, but your heart, Elijah, a gentle spirit of prophecy, is not a warring spirit. Why do you think Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit? While I enjoy working with your heart, with a warring spirit, you would have been strengthened to do the will of God by now, and My job would be finished,” explained the Spirit. “And all the world would know: Elijah has come.”
No matter what, the Spirit never fails to find a way to remind me of my calling as God’s servant to come called Elijah. But this story is about why I voted for Bush and how the Spirit strengthens both the soul and spirit to bring about the will God. The same Spirit that strengthens my heart and soul to play the role of His servant to come called Elijah, I believe strengthens Bush to serve as our President, even if the Spirit only strengthens his heart, which in turn strengthens his soul. Strengthened by the words that are delivered to our hearts and souls by the Spirit of the Lord. Two different human beings with two different types of callings. The prophet and the President.
While I was shaken after this encounter with my friends and vowed to never vote again, I knew that if I did decide to vote in the second election, there would be no need to ask God Again. But it’s ironic I was called stupid and mocked by those same friends in much the same way as I was attacked during the first election, whenever the conversation came up about who I would vote for.
To this day, my friends cannot understand why I voted for Bush. When I try to explain about this conversation I had with God, I usually get cut off before I can finish. Then I get the wide-eyed look as if to say, surely, this person cannot believe he talks to God. They act as if this is something I just conjured up in my mind. Perchance had I published this story back then, forcing them to hear me out by reading it, they would have understood my position. And those verbal attacks may have turned into meaningful discussions about the Kingdom of God.
This is what the Spirit revealed in summary right before the first election:
“As far as the Bush man goes,” explained the Spirit, “while he is a citizen of the Kingdom, with a warring spirit to make him brave and courageous, he may not understand the difference between the Kingdom of God and the Body of Christ, which you understand well. Nevertheless, it is your hearts that makes you fellow brethren in My Kingdom, thus says the Lord. And My Spirit, which would be Me, Robert, strengthens you to do God’s will. Knowing what you know now, Robert. Who are you going to vote for, and why?”
The answer to the question was simple. And for the life of me, I could not see how this was a bad thing. To have a man anointed by God to lead us? So I say to all my black friends: It had nothing to do with politics, for I really don’t care for politicians, but everything to do with God. That’s why I voted for the one God’s Spirit called… “The Bush Man.”
Note: Everyone should vote. My vow to exercise my right not to vote again was an emotional reaction to the way my friends reacted. Even though I didn’t vote in Trump’s first election, I felt moved by God to try to help in some form or fashion with what I perceived to be a good man being maligned by the media and Democratic Party. So I wrote: Presidential Good Vs Evil.
